    SUCCESS FOR UTEP ACCOUNTING GRADUATES

We've always known that our UTEP accounting student graduates and accounting faculty are among the best of the best. But now this fact has been confirmed by the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy (TSBPA). The TSBPA recently announced that the most recent University Pass Rate on the CPA exam for UTEP students was 70.97%. During this period this rate was the highest in the UT-System.

    Way to go UTEP!!!

    NEWS FROM THE TSCPA

    GET IRS INFORMATION ONLINE

Obtain up-to-the-minute information on tax and IRS changes by visiting the TSCPA Tax Issues online community at http://tscpa.org/resource/membercommunities/taxissues/index.asp. After logging in as a member, you’ll find links to a variety of resources.

You can also receive the tax issues e-newsletter (at no charge, as a member benefit) by sending a subscription request to pwyatt@tscpa.net.

RAISING THE PROFESSION'S PROFILE IN YOUR COMMUNITY

As part of TSCPA’s effort to connect CPAs with community service opportunities, the Society has prepared a list of five ways you can make a difference where you live.
    1. Sponsor a team or take part in a tournament for charity. Bring along your spouse, children, friends, and co-workers for added fun.
    2. Let a high school student see what being a CPA is all about by participating in Junior Achievement’s Groundhog Day job shadowing program. Get more information at www.jobshadow.org.
    3. Help low-income people who cannot prepare their own tax returns by participating in the IRS’ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program. To locate the VITA site nearest you, call 800-829-1040.
    4. Join the local board of a nonprofit organization that helps those in need. (To broaden your skill set and get a break from the tasks you perform at work, don’t hesitate to request volunteer assignments in areas other than finance.)
    5. Tutor students in math or reading as they prepare for statewide testing.

    FINANCIAL LITERACY

If a personal finance resolution tops your list or the list of someone you know this New Year, stop by www.ValueYourMoney.org. Texas Society of CPAs’ free consumer financial literacy Web site features practical articles and helpful resources to get your finances on track in 2009. Be sure to check out the new downloadable financial fitness wall calendar on the homepage under Personal Finance Tools. Also, visit the Parenthood section for information about the children’s book club, which promotes literature to help them learn that money really doesn’t grow on trees.

    MEMBERSHIP RECRUITMENT

The autumn recruitment campaign has come to a successful close. TSCPA welcomed 360 new CPA members and 440 new student members. Many thanks to those who recruited new members!

    FINANCIAL LITERACY

Now that tax season has rolled around, many taxpayers will be seeking CPA services and trying to learn about recent tax law changes. Thanks to the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) new tax season presentation materials, you can showcase your expertise and help people in your community without having to spend precious time writing a speech. AICPA’s Tax Saving Tips presentation includes a speech and PowerPoint slides. These Speakers Bureau resources are available in the Resource Center on tscpa.org by clicking on Member Communities, then Volunteer. You can also request free brochures on the topic by e-mailing Jennifer Nimmo jnimmo@tscpa.net or phoning 800-428-0272 ext. 652 / 972-687-8652.

    ACCOUNTING CAREER EDUCATION (ACE)

Spring showers not only bring May flowers, they also bring career fairs. A good way to connect students with the CPA profession is by volunteering to help your chapter with classroom presentations and career fairs. Also, TSCPA has sent an ACE postcard to chapter-selected schools. The postcard reminds teachers to call on TSCPA if they need free materials or guest speakers during the spring semester. Let your chapter know if you are interested! Or e-mail Donna Fritz dfritz@tscpa.net or phone 800-428-0272 ext. 201 / 972-687-8501.

    DEPRESSION CAN BE HELPED

Sad and tired all the time? Feel the pressures of your job are crushing you? It could be more than the winter blahs; you might be suffering from depression. The TSCPA Accountants Confidential Assistance Network (ACAN) is there for you. Phone 866-766-ACAN. We’re here to help.
