    LEADERSHIP EL PASO SCHOLARSHIP

The El Paso Chapter will once again sponsor a participant in the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce's Leadership El Paso program. From all of the applications received by the Chamber, participants will be selected based on demonstration of commitment to community service and leadership abilities.

The time commitment for the program is one day per month for one year beginning in January 8, 2010. There is also a mandatory two-day overnight retreat in January. As a member of this prestigious group, our winner will meet with key decision-makers of the city where they will discuss current events. Previous scholarship winners were Roxie Samaniego, Josh Lucas, Thania Gonzalez and Rick Porras.

If you or someone you know is either a CPA or a CPA Candidate, is a member of the El Paso Chapter, and exhibits a dedication to El Paso and strong leadership skills, please submit his/her name and contact information to Cory Gano at cgano@sbngcpa.com. Interested members will need to submit an electronic copy of the Chamber's completed application for consideration by the selection committee. The deadline is Friday, September 4th.

    CPAs HELPING SCHOOLS GOLF TOURNAMENT

The CPAs Helping Schools Golf Tournament will be held this year on Friday, October 23, 2009, at the Butterfield Trail Golf Club. Over the past 14 years, the Chapter has raised almost $37,000 for scholarships with most of it coming from the golf tournament.

There are two great opportunities for you to participate.
The first opportunity is putting together a team with members of your firm or company. Feel free to also include clients which provides a way to enhance CPA/client relationships. (Of course it's a great way to enhance your chances of winning if the client happens to be a terriffic golfer!)

If you absolutely cannot spare the time away from the office, you can also support the Chapter and the UTEP accounting program by serving as a sponsor of the tournament. There are many levels of sponsorship ranging from $50 up to $1,500.

For more information, contact either Robert Diaz at 843-1040, e-mail rdiazcpa@aol.com; or Ricardo Porras at 544-6770, e-mail rporras@sbngcpa.com.

    DON'T MISS IT!!!!

    NEWS FROM TSCPA

Find a Mentor on TSCPA’s Online Mentor Network

Are you weighing a career move and looking for a little guidance? Do you need advice on resolving a conflict in the office? Since you probably don’t want to discuss these types of issues with your boss, TSCPA has developed a customized database for you to find a CPA mentor. Called Mentor Network, the program is available online at tscpa.org and lets CPA, candidate and student members search for potential mentors via criteria like chapter, years of experience and specialty area.

All you do is enter your desired specifications, choose a mentor from the list of matches, and then e-mail your question. It may be a one-time exchange or it may develop into regular e-mail correspondence. Besides finding a mentor on tscpa.org, you can also volunteer to become one.

    Visit the Mentor Network: http://www.tscpa.org/mentornetwork/index.asp

    Looking for Peer Review Resources?

Did you know that the members of TSCPA’s Peer Review Committee are available to answer questions about the peer review process? These individuals from various chapter areas are excellent go-to people for your questions. To find out who may be available to help you, contact staff liaison Jerry Cross. (E-mail jcross@tscpa.net; phone 800-428-0272 ext. 617 or 972-687-8617.)

    Tell a Student About Membership

If you know a business major who is not yet a TSCPA student member, send him or her to the Student Lounge section of the TSCPA Web site at http://www.tscpa.org/studentLounge/. Students who join now will enjoy membership until May 31, 2010, for only $35. Benefits include a $300 discount off Becker CPA exam review courses and other CPA exam review discounts, listing TSCPA membership on their resumes, unrestricted access to TSCPA's Members Only and Student Lounge sections of tscpa.org, receiving TSCPA publications, and more.

Four $250 tuition/book reimbursements, provided by the Accounting Education Foundation, will be awarded through a random drawing in October. To be eligible, students must be valid student members (renewed by Sept. 1, 2009), majoring in accounting.

For more information or to receive an application by mail, contact Donna Fritz. (E-mail dfritz@tscpa.net; phone 800-428-0272 ext. 201 or 972-687-8501.)
