    NEWS FROM EL PASO CHAPTER

    NO DECEMBER CHAPTER MEETING

    There will not be a meeting of the El Paso Chapter - Texas Society of CPAs in December.

    The chapter's next meeting is scheduled for January 26th, 2010. This meeting will feature a Texas State Board of Public Accountancy update, swearing-in ceremony for El Paso's newest CPAs and the chapter's annual officer and director nominee's election. The January speakers are Kym Anderson, CPA and TSCPA Chairman, and Jay Dunbar, CPA, from the TSBPA.

    8-HOUR CPE CLASS ON JANUARY 6th, 2010

    On Wednesday, January 6th, 2010, the chapter is providing an 8-hour CPE class for new tax staff. This class is an introductory explanation of individual taxation including how to prepare a 1040.

    The class presenters are Joe Medina, Deloitte & Touche LLP Tax Manager and Sage Goldsmith, Deloitte & Touche LLP Tax Associate. Mr. Medina and Mr. Goldsmith both work in Deloitte's Private Client Advisors (PCA) group.

    The cost for attending the class is $125 for members and $150 for non-members. This price includes lunch and parking at the Camino Real Hotel garage.     CONGRATULATIONS TONY BENITEZ

    The El Paso Chapter would like to recognize Tony Benitez, CPA. Mr. Benitez was selected by the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce to participate in their Leadership El Paso Class of 2010.


    OUTSTANDING SENIOR AWARD

    Ada Paniagua, UTEP student, received her Outstanding Senior Award from Kerry Lore, Chapter President, at the November chapter meeting.

    Ms. Paniagua received a $1,500 scholarship for her academic excellence, extracurricular activities and work experience/internships.


    OUTSTANDING JUNIOR AWARD

    Alfredo Espinoza, UTEP student, received his Outstanding Junior Award from Kerry Lore, Chapter President, at the November chapter meeting.

    Mr. Espinoza received a $1,500 scholarship for his academic excellence, extracurricular activities and work experience/internships


    2010 - 2011 EL PASO CHAPTER LEADERSHIP NOMINATIONS

    The Nominating Committee of the El Paso Chapter - TSCPA is submitting for your consideration the following individuals for leadership positions in the 2010 - 2011 chapter year:

The petition must be signed by at least five (5) chapter members in good standing. Members present at the January 26th, 2010 chapter meeting will vote on the nominations.

    NEWS FROM THE TSCPA

    Outstanding Accounting Educator Awards

    TSCPA recently honored four top Texas accounting professors with the organization's 2009 Outstanding Accounting Educator Awards. Recipients are:
    Frederick Bunn – El Paso Community College
    Carolyn Conn, Ph.D., CPA – St. Edward’s University
    Awni M. Zebda, Ph.D. – Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi
    Florence Atiase, CPA – University of Texas at Austin

    At a ceremony held during the TSCPA Accounting Education Conference, the winners each received a $1,000 award provided by the TSCPA Accounting Education Foundation, as well as a plaque for their office and a recognition plaque for their school.

    Criteria for judging include instructional innovation, student motivation and learning opportunities, professional and student accounting organization involvement, research, and publications.
